Ring of Fire 60km Solo Ultra

The Ring of Fire 60 km is a spectacular point-to-point ultra that captures the essence of Ruapehu in one mighty sweep.

Starting on the historic Waihohonu Hut Track on the eastern side of Tongariro National Park, this course showcases the mountain’s incredible diversity. Runners traverse ancient lava flows and scoria fields, weave through mountain beech forest and tussock grasslands, and cross alpine herb fields alive with colour. Along the way are cascading waterfalls, a serene alpine lake, and boulder-strewn rivers — all framed by sweeping panoramic views of the central plateau — before the final descent toward Ohakune.

This is a race for those ready to test themselves against technical mountain terrain while still completing the course in a single day. It’s shorter than the full 100 km, but no less fierce — the climbs are steep, the valleys dramatic, and the rewards unforgettable.

Highlights include:

  • Historic Waihohonu Hut Track – a gateway onto Ruapehu’s eastern slopes.
  • Rangipo Desert – stark, lunar-like terrain, one of the most iconic parts of the course.
  • Glacial Valleys – streams and valleys carved over centuries by glaciers.
  • Return to Ohakune – a finish line shared with the 100 km.

This is your chance to complete a powerful ultra-distance journey with a race that will demand courage and reward you with the shared spirit of the Ring of Fire.

If this is your first time doing an Ultra or you are unsure if you can make the cut-offs, we recommend you try the Ring of Fire Relay with friends or a lesser Tussock Traverse (also on the 28th March 2026 and sharing some of the Ring of Fire Course) distance this year, see how it goes and come back next year and have another crack at the longer event.
