Powhiri Welcome

 The traditional Maori Powhiri & event opening will take place from 11.00am to 12.30pm on Friday 22nd March at Otukou Marae, Otukou Road off State Highway 47 (Directions to Otukou Marae).

This is a very special occasion not to be missed at the foot of Tongariro, one of the Park’s sacred peaks. Please book your place which includes a Marae hosted morning tea in the shop section of your ROF online entry. Bookings for the Powhiri close on Tuesday 19th March.

We highly recommend this experience to give some context to what you’ll be doing the following day.

 

Event Cultural Tours

Want to totally immerse yourself in the cultural history of the Tongariro National Park? Local tour operators Shane & Marama Isherwood (Ngati Hikairo) are offering small group and couples tours for Ring of Fire competitors and supporters throughout event week.

The 5 hour excursion includes transport with pick up from the Chateau Tongariro at 10am daily.

The tour is an absorbing and fascinating insight into the cultural and natural history of Tongariro National Park including  Te Porere Redoubt, Marae Visit, Opotaka – home of the Haka and Trout hatcheries nearby Tongariro River. An optional extra is a visit to the Tokaanu Geothermal Hotpools  at the end of tour.

Sunday Night Hangi

The curtain will come down on Ring of Fire Chapter 2 with the very special traditional Hangi and entertainment on Sunday night, the day after the race.

Anyone wishing to add to their experience – we will be offering a very special Sunday night Hangi (traditional Maori food cooked in a natural earth oven).

Cost is $75.00 per person.  The format will be a powhiri to welcome the Ring of Fire manuhiri (visitors) after which they will be invited into the Whare Tupuna (Ancestral House) Okahukura, to share Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro korero/history including Te Kahui Maunga / Family of Mountains before dinner and some entertainment.

For logistical reasons are minimum of 50 people booked is required to make this event happen.
